Discover the Place du Tertre: Complete Guide

To make the most of your visit, here's everything you need to know about this legendary square.

History and atmosphere

Place du Tertre (literally "Place de la petite colline") stands on the site of the ancient Roman forum of Lutetia. In the Middle Ages, it was the main square of the village of Montmartre, then independent of Paris.

The artistic golden age: In the late 19th century, with the arrival of artists such as Pissarro, Toulouse-Lautrec and then Picasso, Montmartre became the beating heart of the world's artistic avant-garde. The Place du Tertre became a meeting place for artists, who set up their easels there.

Today: Around 300 artists are authorized to exhibit on the square, according to a strict rotation system. Each artist has his or her own space, and must meet certain quality criteria. The tradition has been perpetuated for over a century!

Les Artistes de la Place

Different types of artists :

  • Portraitists: draw your portrait in 20-30 minutes (charcoal, pastel, watercolor)
  • Caricaturists: create humorous portraits by accentuating your features

  • Contemporary artists: propose original creations

Indicative rates (2025) :

  • Caricature portrait: €30-50
  • Realistic charcoal portrait: €50-80
  • Elaborate color portrait: €80-150

Our tips for a successful experience:

  1. Take a look at the work of several artists before making your choice.
  2. Ask to see their portfolio of previous projects
  3. Price is negotiable to a certain extent, so please be respectful.
  4. Specify your expectations: style, format, deadline
